Almost Paradise
Today I visited Jiuduansha, a small group of three islands, to assess the geography and wild bird population. At first glance the islands resemble a little slice of paradise and an ideal location for a bird sanctuary. Only one of the islands has an actual pier and the construction of a ranger station has recently begun. The distinct scent of freshly milled lumber hung in the humid air.
We putted around in our boat to check out the smaller islands. As the shore came into view it was absolutely teaming with birds. I'm almost certain that migratory ducks must stop here when they are en route to other locales.
The officials running the preserve were also acting as our guides. At first they seemed hesitant to work with us but as the day progressed I was pleased to learn that they wanted to participate in banding migratory birds for our avian influenza research.
After our tour we returned to the mainland and sat down for a delicious lunch of freshly caught seafood. The conversation turned from excited banter to laughter and even political debate. Overall, I felt really good about this new collaboration and I am excited to start testing wild birds for avian influenza in this part of the world.
Reporting from China, EcoHealth Alliance scientist Kurt Vandegrift is working toward monitoring highly pathogenic Avian influenza in wild migratory waterfowl.
