Dr. William Karesh Appointed to Council on Foreign Relations
EcoHealth Alliance is honored to announce the appointment of Dr. William Karesh, Executive Vice President for Health and Policy, as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). As a member of the CFR, Dr. Karesh joins a community of leading experts in wide-ranging areas of international affairs. The CFR provides a forum for exchange with world leaders, senior government officials, members of Congress, and prominent thinkers and practitioners in academia, policy, and business.
In 2005 Dr. Karesh authored a publication in Foreign Affairs highlighting the significance of the human-animal link and the intensifying pressures that contribute to the emergence and spread of disease, biodiversity loss, and the unsustainable illegal trade in wildlife. Throughout his career as a wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Karesh has worked tirelessly to promote the health and survival of all species. As an ex-officio member of Senator Joe Lieberman and Governor Tom Ridges’s Blue Ribbon Study Panel on Biodefense, he recently contributed to a report calling for more centralized and coordinated U.S. efforts to counter biological and chemical threats. Dr. Karesh also serves as a member of the World Health Organization’s Roster of Experts and the World Organisation of Animal Health’s Working Group on Wildlife.
Dr. Peter Daszak, President of EcoHealth Alliance, added, “We are honored by Dr. Karesh’s appointment and excited for the opportunity to expand the impact and translation of EcoHealth Alliance’s innovative science to promote global health and the protection of ecosystems worldwide.”
