One Health in the South Caucasus

An assessment of One Health operations and capacities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia

EcoHealth Alliance is pleased to launch a series of three publications that take stock of and assess One Health operations in the South Caucasus region. These reports highlight the progress that Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia have made in implementing the One Health approach, while identifying continued needs for One Health system strengthening. Each report is co-authored by EcoHealth Alliance and a team of expert consultants from each country, and are available in English and each relevant language. Specific highlights of the report include:

• Overview of current One Health initiatives, national plans, policies, biosurveillance systems, and multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms
• A country-specific risk profile that identifies key factors for infectious disease emergence, spread, vulnerability and mitigation
• Case studies examining implementation successes and challenges at subnational and country levels
• Key recommendations that synthesize findings on One Health coordination, workforces and training, surveillance and monitoring of disease risks, laboratory systems, disease prevention and control, vulnerabilities, and financial resources

The report findings and overall approach provide a practical starting point for identifying systems-level coverage and needs to address threats to humans, animals and the environment in line with a One Health approach. It can be replicated for other countries and regions, in particular to guide implementation of the global One Health Joint Plan of Action and related investment priorities.
