Disease Ecology Research Scientist

EcoHealth Alliance is seeking a research scientist to work on a bat-borne virus ecology research project in South Africa. This New York-based position is ideal for a recent PhD with a passion for One Health and studying the spillover of emerging viral zoonoses, who wants to work within a multidisciplinary team at an exciting science-based NGO. This position requires experience with spatial analysis, as well as proficiency with R. Experience modeling infection dynamics and animal population; movement data is a plus. Successful applicants will have strong writing and analytical skills. Responsibilities include providing technical input into study design and project implementation, data collection and analysis, training and mentoring junior scientists, and grant and manuscript writing. Some international travel will be required once conditions related to COVID-19 allow. The position will be based at EcoHealth Alliance headquarters in New York. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, this position may begin as a remote assignment, with the expectation of transitioning into the New York office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with EcoHealth Alliance scientists, partners, and associates under a multi-year disease ecology research project in South Africa under EHA’s Vice President for Science and Outreach
  • Participate in study development, implementation, data analysis, writing, and training within the project
  • Work with EcoHealth Alliance scientists to develop new scientific research projects
  • Develop new funding applications
  • Write manuscripts, project reports and white papers
  • Present work at scientific meetings and to project partners
  • Participate in outreach to donors, potential collaborators, and other institutions at conferences, scientific, and public meetings

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Ecology or Epidemiology or equivalent work experience
  • Experience with spatial analysis (GIS, remote sensing), animal movement ecology (e.g. telemetry data) quantitative analysis including disease modeling or biostatistics, experience with R, and database skills
  • Demonstrated writing skills (publication record will be considered)
  • Experience with international research projects is a plus
  • Must be self-driven, highly motivated, and organized
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, team orientation and a strong sense of diplomacy
  • Willingness to work some early mornings and evenings according to international time zones
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required

Salary Range

$75,000-$85,000
