EcoHealth Alliance seeks an adventurous, highly-organized, collaborative and self-driven Country Liaison to work internationally under our disease ecology and pandemic prevention programs. The Research Scientist/PREDICT Country Liaison will work collaboratively with other staff to develop, execute and monitor projects involving wildlife disease surveillance, and human disease surveillance in Central and West Africa (Republic of Congo and Côte d'Ivoire). This work will focus on how land-use change, agricultural intensification, and the wildlife trade drive risk of zoonotic disease emergence. The successful applicant will work closely with other staff on the PREDICT surveillance, behavioral risk, and modeling teams as well as with PREDICT and EPT consortium partners and in-country collaborators to ensure successful surveillance and research programs.
The Research Scientist/PREDICT Country Liaison will have a collaborative approach to research and complex problem solving, as well as the diplomacy and tact to work successfully with government and other organizational partners. This position requires the creativity to collaboratively design and lead surveillance and research activities and to analyze and publish results. French language fluency is required. Experience in epidemiology, work in francophone Africa and/or other international sites, analytical approaches, laboratory techniques, and publication of results are preferred. A passion for understanding the process of zoonotic disease emergence is key.
The Research Scientists/PREDICT Country Liaison will communicate with in-country project personnel, report on activities during PREDICT internal meetings and partner calls, and report proactively on plans, activities, and findings. The position is based at EcoHealth Alliance in New York City and will involve significant international travel in West and Central Africa and potentially elsewhere (approximately 5+ one-week or multi-week trips each year).
+ Work closely with President and Executive Vice President for Health and Policy, and EHA PREDICT leadership to design and execute surveillance and research projects to understand the process of zoonotic disease emergence.
+ Develop innovative and rigorous strategies for analysis of current and future data.
+ Represent EcoHealth Alliance and the PREDICT project and work with stakeholders and collaborators at local, national, and international levels.
This role requires the following competence:
Educational background: minimum Master’s level graduate degree with training and/or experience with epidemiology, field research, and analytical research on constrained countries, and veterinary, human medicine, or public health background a plus).
Program Management: ability and initiative to organize field surveillance and laboratory work related to zoonotic disease emergence in West and Central Africa.
People Management (including peer relationships): must be able to manage field, and program support staff, and to work effectively with in-country collaborators.
Language Skills: bilingual French and English: proficiency reading, writing, and speaking (preferably Francophone African); fluency in French and English is a requirement. Other regional language skills a plus.
Financial Accountability: should be able to ensure fiscal prudence of programs.
Issues Management: should have experience using a strong fact basis and a diplomatic, collaborative approach to address problems and sensitive issues.

+ Professional Development. The successful applicant will be encouraged to attend conferences, where appropriate, and courses for the joint purposes of professional development and promoting EcoHealth Alliance and EcoHealth Alliance Programs. These will normally be supported through EcoHealth Alliance funding, or funding garnered by the Research Scientist.
+ Promotion. The successful applicant will be assessed annually on job performance. Promotion and job descripTion will be modified accordingly. Key performance indicators are the employee’s record of attracting funding, publishing papers, and advancing the goals of projects.
+ Funds for travel to national and international field and research sites, appropriate conferences and business meetings, and office supplies and equipment will be covered by EcoHealth Alliance.
